To fully automate an average 4-bedroom, 3-bath home, you might spend up to $15,000. Luxury, fully connected homes run $10,000 to $150,000. Labor to install wired systems costs around $85 per hour. Home automation includes lights, security, locks, thermostats, and entertainment.

Adding home automation to an existing home costs $500 to $5,000. Basic security systems with door and window sensors, a motion detector, and a control panel start at $200. Cameras, garage door openers and locks, light switches, outlets, and thermostats range from $50 to $250 each.

Smart home systems connect to the internet and your mobile devices. They give you remote control of your home’s security, temperature, lighting, and more. It’s easy to get started with a basic system that includes a few connected devices. You can add additional features and devices as you go.

How has smart technology changed society?

Smart technology has changed the way people do business. People are using smart technology to get information, education, and entertainment. They also use it for marketing, politics, online shopping, and health information. It has transformed how we communicate, work, shop, and live. For example, a president once was able to bring social media into their campaign for the presidency and, won.

One of the most significant changes that smart technology has brought is the way we communicate. Remember when people would communicate through letters and phone calls? Or, as a kid, we’d ride around on our bikes looking for friends because we only had home phones! And if your mom was on the phone call with an old friend, it could be hours until you get to use the phone.

Now, we communicate through email, texts, social media, zoom, and facetime, too many to mention! We even have virtual reality as a means of communication today!. It’s made it easier for us to stay in touch, but it also means everyone, at all times, knows what you are doing if you are sharing it on a social media platform. Personally, I have taken a three-year break so far from keeping abreast of all that social media temptation, rabbit hole insanity. It has brought me so much peace!

Another change that smart technology has brought is the way we work. In the past, we would go to an office or a job site. Now, especially as a writer, I can work from anywhere in the world! This has made it easier for many people to start their own businesses. In particular, moms. I am one of those mothers. I started working from home when I was five months pregnant with my oldest. So my children are used to our home’s mom/work-life scenario. As they got older, though, I needed to separate from them. Hence the rise of coffee shops on every corner as well! At least that’s my theory.

Smart technology has also changed the way we shop. In the past, people would go to a store to buy things. Now, I almost buy everything online. It is so much easier for people to get what they want. I do that “big box store” shopping through an app because if I go there in person, I will spend way more than I intended. Online shopping has saved me a lot of money and time.

What is the future of smart technology?

The future of smart technology is to make our lives easier and more efficient. For example, they can talk to each other and share data. This will make it easier for us to control our homes, cars, and appliances. We will also see more artificial intelligence in our devices. This will allow them to learn our habits and preferences. As a result, they will be able to do more things for us automatically.

Suppose the current demand is any indicator. In that case, a majority of the new devices will be smart power outlets, speakers, and light bulbs, as well as video doorbells, remote-activated locks, and of course, surveillance cameras. But, according to the smart home industry, which is pushing a new concept: “contextual awareness,” this is just the beginning.

What is a contextual awareness example?

Context-awareness is the ability of a system or system component to gather information about its environment at any given time and adapt behaviors accordingly. Contextual or context-aware computing uses software and hardware to collect and analyze data to guide responses automatically.

Common examples of contextual data include the user’s location, time of day, weather conditions, and even recent interactions with other devices. This data can provide more tailored and personalized experiences for users.

For example, a music app may automatically adjust its playlist based on the time of day or a user’s location. When I travel, especially south during the winter months, my music apps magically start playing reggae or island music! Or how about when a smart home system turns the heat on when it detects that the user is on their way home from work. So cool!

How about when you’re in your smart vehicle? As you slow down, the volume decreases! The lights on the dash dim as the sun goes down, and Google maps or some other “fruit” map app suggests regular locations you visit. One time, I had a trip planned in my calendar, and as we got closer to the date, the maps kept suggesting that as a location to go! It was almost like a little kid waiting to go on vacation, and I kept talking to my vehicle, jokingly saying, “Not today honey. Two more days then we go to Auntie Steph’s,”.

Smart technology can be fun, and it can also be irritating. For instance, when you are texting, and the autocorrect changes your words! You know the word. The one they constantly change to “duck”? Or when the automated voice keeps answering questions, you didn’t ask. I love to yell at them “I’m not talking to you Siri!” (jokingly, of course).

Contextual awareness is made possible by a combination of sensors, data analytics, and artificial intelligence. The sensors collect data about the user’s environment, which is then analyzed to extract meaning and generate insights. Artificial intelligence is used to decide how to respond to the said data.

How much does a smart home system cost?

Overall, we have found that the cost of a smart home system varies significantly as it depends on so many factors like the size of the home, type of smart devices, how many smart devices,  do you want whole-home automation, or just a few select features like lighting control, security, etc.

On the low end, you could get started with a smart home system for around $200. However, suppose you went with a more comprehensive system with multiple features and devices. In that case, hiring a professional company specializing in smart home installation and service is best.
